Chef-Eth, The Kingfisher – A Salish Legend.
Along the river, there was a vibrant camp where many birds made their home. They dwelled both on the land and among the trees, delighting in the bounty of berries, bugs, and worms. Occasionally, the birds would discuss others who lived differently from them, often making remarks about their habits. When it came to Kingfisher, they noted, “He’s such a carefree bird, always flying away from home. Surely, he can’t be taking good care of his family.”
One day, Kingfisher overheard these comments. He paused and replied, “You all focus solely on feeding yourselves. Look at me; I bring home a fish every day for my wife and family and never face any trouble at home. That is my way of living.”
