Creation Story and The Importance Of Dreaming
The Great Spirit, in a realm beyond our known time, observed a void devoid of color and beauty. Silence reigned in the darkness; nothing could be seen or felt. The Great Spirit resolved to fill this emptiness with light and life. With immense power, the sparks of creation were commanded into existence. Tôlba, the Great Turtle, emerged from the waters to become the land, and upon the turtle’s back, the Great Spirit shaped mountains and valleys. White clouds were placed into the expansive blue skies, bringing joy to the Great Spirit. He declared, “Everything is ready now. I will fill this place with the joyful movement of life.”
In deep contemplation, the Great Spirit pondered the creatures he would bring into existence. He considered their habitats, their actions, and their purpose. Yearning for a flawless plan, he thought so intently that fatigue overcame him, and he fell asleep. His dreams were filled with visions of creation—animals crawling on four legs, others on two. Some creatures soared with wings, while others swam with fins. An array of colorful plants blanketed the ground, insects buzzed, dogs barked, birds sang, and human voices called out. Everything appeared disordered, and the Great Spirit feared it was a bad dream, doubting that such imperfection could exist.
Upon awakening, the Great Spirit noticed a beaver gnawing on a branch and realized that the world of his dreams had manifested into reality. Everything he had envisioned came true. Observing the beaver construct its home and a dam to create a pond for its family, the Great Spirit understood that every being and creation had its place and purpose in the unfolding of time. This story has been shared among the people across generations, reminding us not to question our dreams, for they are our creation.
