Women’s Fancy VS Men’s Traditional | Black Hills Powwow 2025

At the 2025 Black Hills Powwow (He Sapa Wacipi Na Oskate), held at The Monument in Rapid City, South Dakota, the “Women’s Fancy vs. Men’s Traditional” showdown was a highlight of the Saturday night SNL Black Hills Dancer Grand Entry. This specific pairing is popular for dance-offs, showcasing the stark contrast between high-energy athletic movements and grounded, steady storytelling.

I keep coming back to watch this. I'm British and knew nothing of what a Powwow was beyond a general gathering and had never heard of a Jingle dress dancer. Each one seemed better than the last but having never seen any at all before, the first girl and her leaping steps and her regalia put my jaw on the floor. I'm babbling but having thought via Hollywood and the rest of American culture that all this was gone and then seeing an actual Indian woman dance it gave me hope.
